What is an SEO Retainer?
An SEO retainer simply means a blog or website owner pays an SEO consultant a fixed amount of money each month for a specific set of SEO services. These services can include, but are not limited to, keyword research, content creation, on-page SEO (optimizing already written content), social media sharing and engagement, off-site promotion and brand engagement, link building, and coaching.
The majority of our SEO retainers include SEO coaching, content optimization, and social media sharing. Thus our SEO projects create a collaborative environment between our agency and our clients. We work together on content marketing, social media optimization, and link building efforts, which allows our clients to learn about SEO and begin to understand and apply SEO best practices to their activities.
What About Performance Based SEO Pricing?
Generally a new or inexperienced SEO will offer performance based SEO pricing, pay for ranking, and pay for traffic arrangements. These types of engagements are very risky for the SEO consultant, so you’ll see very few SEO consultants and agencies agree to them.
More experienced SEO firms will only offer hourly, project, and retainer based SEO prices. Having over decade of SEO experience, we offer clients hourly SEO fees, project based fees, and monthly SEO retainer.
Why don’t we offer pay on performance SEO pricing? Quite frankly we’re busy and we don’t need to accept a delay in payments. It’s the beautiful part of loving what you do and being good at what you do.
Why Would Someone Want a Standalone SEO Project?
We perform a lot of one-time SEO work and really enjoy this type of SEO project. The reason for this is we help build an SEO foundation for our client and also get to educate the client on SEO best practices as we work together. This allows the client to learn the fundamentals of SEO and then take this knowledge and apply it to their own website or blog.
We are educators default and we like to teach more then we like to do. The more we educate clients on the right way to perform search engine optimization, the more successful they’ll be in the long-term.
Client success, return on investment, and payback are all important to us, so we encourage one-time SEO projects over monthly SEO retainers when we see it is a fit for a potential client.
Example SEO Prices and Packages
Now that we’ve tooted our own horn, let us qualify that by saying we try our best to offer competitive SEO pricing so the average organization can afford our services.
Keep in mind that SEO pricing is going to vary greatly by consultant or agency, their level of expertise (local vs national or international), their team’s years of SEO experience (recent college grade or long-term SEO veteran), and their current workload.
Our current SEO prices and rates are:
- Hourly SEO Consulting and Coaching = $200
- Standalone SEO Projects = $10,000 – $50,000
- Monthly SEO Retainers = $2,000 – $6,000
We realize that the monthly SEO retainer amount is a fairly big range, but we price SEO retainers based on the client’s individual needs. A family doctor will require far less work than a software company that competes against Microsoft. A B2C based local business who focuses on a small geographical area will also require much less time and effort than a B2B based organization that competes in search at an international level. It’s a matter of how much time we think we need to spend to help make the project a success.
